A Briefing of the Girl Scout Membership Levels

Unlike the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts don’t have to earn badges and reach achievements to bridge to the next rank. As a Girl Scout, you are placed in a level that corresponds with your age so that the activities you do are of an appropriate level.

Here’s a little bit about the six membership levels of Girl Scouting:

My first day of Daisies!

Daisies:

Age: kindergarten - first grade

What they do: Daisies earn badges called petals. Each petal represents a part of the Girl Scout Law and can be earned by doing something that reflects it.

What they’re all about: The point of this level is to make new friends and learn how to work as a team.

Brownies: Age: second - third grade

What they do: Brownies earn badges called try-its that encourage them to learn new things and have new experiences. Brownies can also complete Journeys and sell cookies.

What they’re all about: The point of this level is to bond with friends and go on adventures. Exploration of nature and the outdoors is a skill that’s further encouraged in Brownies.

Juniors:

Age: fourth - fifth grade

What they do: Juniors earn badges that teach skills. This is the level when Scouts can camp overnight for the first time and when they have the opportunity to earn their Bronze Awards.

What they’re all about: This is the level where Girl Scouts are first encouraged to make change in their communities and come up with big ideas.

Cadettes:

Age: sixth - eighth grade

What they do: Cadettes continue to earn skill-building badges and are encouraged to be more adventurous in their outdoor exploration. They also have the opportunity to earn their Silver Awards.

What they’re all about: This level is about connecting with lifelong friends and building confidence. This is also the first level where leadership and mentorship are encouraged between older and younger Girl Scouts.

Seniors:

Age: ninth - tenth grade

What they do: Seniors begin career exploration and gain the opportunity to apply for travel destinations through the organization. They also can earn their Gold Awards.

What they’re all about: This level is about discovering who you are and who you want to be. Girls are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and think globally.

Ambassadors:

Age: eleventh - twelfth grade

What they do: Ambassadors work toward many of the same goals as Seniors, but focus on taking leadership and mentor roles.

What they’re all about: This level is about being a strong and passionate leader. It’s about taking new opportunities without fear. It’s about growing up into a competent adult who is ready to take on the world.
